Welcome to The House of Rest
Founded in 2014 by Hermoine Macura-Noble – the first Australian English-speaking news anchor in the Middle East and a lifelong humanitarian – The House of Rest (THOR) was created in response to the growing need for care, protection, and cross-cultural connection across the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region.
While reporting on the Syrian Humanitarian crisis for Gulf News, Hermoine encountered countless stories of strength and struggle. These firsthand experiences inspired the birth of The House of Rest – a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting vulnerable communities through empowerment, healing, and hope.
About Us
At The House of Rest, we bridge cultures, provide critical support, and create safe spaces for women, children, and families affected by displacement and instability. For over a decade, we’ve worked hand-in-hand with local communities, humanitarian partners, and creatives to deliver long-term, meaningful impact.
What We Do
1. Art & Cultural Programs
We believe in the power of storytelling to build empathy and connection. Our traveling exhibition, Faces of the Middle East, features photography, art, and dialogue that raise awareness and foster cross-cultural understanding. In safe zones across the region, we offer creative workshops in art, photography, and film for youth and families as a tool for emotional healing and self-expression.
2. Community Relief Projects
With generous support from donors and partners, we lead humanitarian initiatives that deliver essentials like food supplies, basic shelter resources, and access to healthcare in underserved areas. These projects help restore dignity and stability in times of crisis.
3. Empowerment Workshops for Women
We offer personalized programs designed to help women build resilience, develop practical skills, and access opportunities for growth. Our workshops are rooted in dignity, empowerment, and long-term support.
